Vannevar Bush was an American engineer and science administrator who built the differential analyser, an early analogue computer, and led US scientific research during the Second World War. His 1945 essay “As We May Think” described the memex, a desk-sized device for linked information that inspired hypertext and the web.
Biography
MIT and the differential analyser
Bush earned degrees at Tufts and a doctorate in engineering from MIT and Harvard. At MIT he built the differential analyser (1931), a mechanical analogue computer for solving equations, and became vice-president and dean of engineering. Claude Shannon was among his students. He co-founded the company that became Raytheon.
Wartime science
As head of the Office of Scientific Research and Development from 1941, Bush directed thousands of scientists working on radar, the proximity fuze and the Manhattan Project, and advised President Roosevelt.
Science, the Endless Frontier
His 1945 report argued that government should fund basic research at universities. It led to the creation of the National Science Foundation in 1950 and shaped the American research system.
The memex
In “As We May Think”, published in The Atlantic in July 1945, Bush imagined a device that stored books and records and let users link them with associative trails. It influenced Douglas Engelbart, Ted Nelson and the inventors of hypertext.
