Ted Nelson is an American information-technology pioneer who coined the terms “hypertext” and “hypermedia” in the 1960s. He founded Project Xanadu in 1960 to build a global system of linked documents, and his book Computer Lib/Dream Machines inspired the personal-computer generation.
Biography
Background
Nelson is the son of the actress Celeste Holm and the director Ralph Nelson. He studied philosophy at Swarthmore College and sociology at Harvard, where in 1960 he began designing a computer writing system.
Hypertext
In a 1965 paper he introduced the word “hypertext” for non-sequential writing in which texts link to each other. He envisaged documents connected by two-way links, with quotations that stay connected to their sources.
Project Xanadu
Founded in 1960, Project Xanadu aimed to create a universal library with versioning and micropayments for authors. It has been called the longest-running vaporware project, though it influenced the web.
Computer Lib
His self-published 1974 book Computer Lib/Dream Machines urged ordinary people to understand computers. He later earned a PhD from Keio University and has criticised the web for one-way links.
