John Mauchly was an American physicist who conceived ENIAC with J. Presper Eckert, the first general-purpose electronic digital computer, and co-founded the company that built UNIVAC, the first US commercial computer. He was also a founder and early president of the Association for Computing Machinery.
Biography
Background
Mauchly earned a PhD in physics at Johns Hopkins University and taught at Ursinus College, where he wanted machines to analyse weather data. In 1941 he visited John Atanasoff in Iowa to see his electronic calculator.
ENIAC
At the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School, Mauchly wrote a 1942 memo proposing an electronic computer. With Eckert he built ENIAC for the US Army, completed in 1945.
UNIVAC and business
In 1946 they founded the Eckert–Mauchly Computer Corporation and built BINAC and UNIVAC I. Mauchly hired Grace Hopper, who wrote the first compiler for UNIVAC.
Later years
Mauchly helped found the Association for Computing Machinery in 1947 and served as its president. A 1973 court case ruled that the ENIAC patent was invalid partly because of ideas from Atanasoff. He died in 1980.
