Willard Boyle was a Canadian physicist who, with George Smith at Bell Labs, invented the charge-coupled device (CCD) in 1969. CCDs became the image sensors in digital cameras, telescopes such as Hubble and medical imaging. They shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Biography

Background

Boyle was home-schooled by his mother in a remote part of Quebec until age 14. He flew Spitfires for the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and earned a PhD in physics at McGill University.

Bell Labs

He joined Bell Labs in 1953, where he helped make the first continuously operating ruby laser and worked on semiconductor research. He also contributed to the Apollo programme through Bellcomm.

The CCD

In October 1969, Boyle and George Smith sketched the charge-coupled device in about an hour. It moves electric charges step by step across a chip, letting light falling on it be read out as an image.

Honours

Boyle retired to Nova Scotia in 1979. He shared the 2009 Nobel Prize and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. He died in 2011.
