Satya Nadella is the chairman and chief executive of Microsoft. Since becoming CEO in 2014 he has shifted the company towards cloud computing and artificial intelligence, and Microsoft has become one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Biography
Hyderabad
Nadella grew up in Hyderabad, the son of an Indian Administrative Service officer and a Sanskrit lecturer. A keen cricketer at the Hyderabad Public School, he studied electrical engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology, then took a master’s in computer science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and an MBA at the University of Chicago.
Microsoft
He joined Microsoft in 1992 after a short spell at Sun Microsystems. He worked on servers, online services and Bing, and as head of the cloud and enterprise group led the growth of the Azure cloud platform.
Chief executive
Nadella became Microsoft’s third CEO in February 2014 and its chairman in 2021. He emphasised a “growth mindset”, opened Microsoft’s products to other platforms, bought LinkedIn and GitHub, and made a major investment in OpenAI, putting AI tools such as Copilot at the heart of Microsoft’s products.
Personal life
He wrote about his leadership philosophy and his family in Hit Refresh (2017). His son Zain, who had cerebral palsy, died in 2022. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2022.
Why they matter
Satya Nadella is credited with one of the great corporate turnarounds of the century. When he became CEO in 2014, Microsoft was seen as a company past its peak; under him it moved to cloud computing with Azure, embraced open source and partnered early with OpenAI, becoming one of the world’s most valuable companies. His emphasis on empathy and a “learn-it-all” culture, shaped partly by caring for his disabled son, offered a different model of leadership in big tech.
