Marvin Minsky was an American cognitive scientist and one of the founders of artificial intelligence. He co-organised the 1956 Dartmouth workshop that named the field, co-founded MIT’s AI laboratory and wrote The Society of Mind. He received the Turing Award in 1969.
Biography
Early life
Minsky grew up in New York, served in the US Navy and studied mathematics at Harvard and Princeton. In 1951 he built SNARC, one of the first machines to simulate a network of neurons.
Founding AI
With John McCarthy, Claude Shannon and Nathaniel Rochester he organised the 1956 Dartmouth summer workshop that launched artificial intelligence as a research field. In 1959 he and McCarthy founded what became the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, which trained generations of researchers.
Ideas and inventions
Minsky invented the confocal scanning microscope, worked on robot arms and computer vision, and introduced “frames” for representing knowledge. His 1969 book Perceptrons, with Seymour Papert, analysed the limits of simple neural networks and influenced the direction of AI research for years.
The Society of Mind
In The Society of Mind (1986) and The Emotion Machine (2006) he argued that intelligence emerges from many simple processes working together. He advised on the film 2001: A Space Odyssey and died in Boston in 2016.
