Sourav Ganguly is a former India captain credited with building a confident, aggressive team in the early 2000s. A stylish left-handed batsman, he scored more than 11,000 one-day international runs and later served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Biography
Debut century
Ganguly made his Test debut at Lord’s in 1996 and scored a century, followed by another in his next Test. Known for his elegant drives through the off side — he was called the “God of the off side” — he formed a prolific one-day opening partnership with Sachin Tendulkar.
Captain
He took over as captain in 2000, after a match-fixing scandal had shaken Indian cricket. He backed young players such as Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan, encouraged a combative attitude and led India to the 2003 World Cup final. Famously, he whirled his shirt on the Lord’s balcony after India chased 326 to win the 2002 NatWest Series final.
Comeback
After losing the captaincy and his place in 2005, he fought his way back into the team and retired in 2008, with 7,212 Test runs and 11,363 ODI runs.
Administrator
Ganguly became president of the Cricket Association of Bengal and was president of the BCCI from 2019 to 2022. He is a popular television host on the Bengali quiz show Dadagiri. He received the Padma Shri in 2004.
