Jasprit Bumrah is an India fast bowler known for his unusual short run-up, deceptive action and deadly yorkers. He has been ranked the world’s top Test bowler, was Player of the Tournament as India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and was named ICC Cricketer of the Year for 2024.
Biography
Early life
Bumrah was raised in Ahmedabad by his mother, a school principal, after his father died when he was five. He practised bowling at home against the skirting of the walls so he would make less noise, which helped him develop his accuracy and yorker.
Breakthrough
Spotted by Mumbai Indians in a domestic T20 match, he joined the IPL franchise in 2013 and made his India debut in 2016. His slingy, hyper-extended action and late swing made him hard to read, and he quickly became India’s go-to bowler at the end of limited-overs innings.
Test success
On his Test debut in South Africa in 2018 he dismissed AB de Villiers, and he went on to take five-wicket hauls in South Africa, England, Australia and the West Indies. He captained India in a Test in 2022 and in Australia in 2024–25, when he took 32 wickets in the series.
World champion
At the 2024 T20 World Cup he took 15 wickets at an economy rate of under 4.2 runs an over and was named Player of the Tournament as India won the title. The ICC named him its Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024. He is married to sports presenter Sanjana Ganesan.
Why they matter
India has produced great batters and spinners for a century, but genuinely world-leading fast bowlers have been rare — Kapil Dev was the exception. Bumrah changed that. His short run-up and hyper-extended action break the coaching textbook, yet they give him pace, late movement and accuracy across all three formats. Analysts often compare his economy rates and strike rates with the West Indian greats of the 1980s. His success, along with that of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, means India now wins Tests abroad with pace as well as spin.
