Rahul Dravid is one of the finest batsmen in Test history, nicknamed “The Wall” for his solid technique. He scored more than 24,000 international runs and holds the record for most catches by a fielder in Tests. As India’s head coach he led the team to the 2024 T20 World Cup title.

Biography

Bangalore

Born in Indore, Dravid grew up in Bangalore, where his father worked for a jam company — hence his teammates’ nickname “Jammy”. He studied commerce at St Joseph’s College and made his Test debut at Lord’s in 1996, scoring 95.

The Wall

Dravid built his career on patience and technique, often batting at number three. His 180 in the 2001 Kolkata Test, in a 376-run partnership with V. V. S. Laxman after India followed on, helped win one of cricket’s greatest comebacks. He made match-winning centuries at Adelaide in 2003 and in England, and took 210 Test catches, a world record for a fielder.

Captain and team man

He captained India from 2005 to 2007, winning a Test series in the West Indies and in England, and often kept wicket in one-day cricket to balance the side. He finished with 13,288 runs in 164 Tests and 10,889 in one-day internationals, retiring in 2012.

Coach

Dravid coached the India Under-19 and India A teams, winning the Under-19 World Cup in 2018, and led the National Cricket Academy. As India’s head coach from 2021 to 2024 he took the side to the final of the 2023 World Cup and to victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2013 and entered the ICC Hall of Fame in 2018.

Why they matter

Dravid’s legacy is unusual: he shaped Indian cricket twice. As a player he was the counterweight to the stroke-makers around him, batting long hours so that Tendulkar, Ganguly, Laxman and Sehwag could flourish, and he holds the record for Test catches. As a coach of the Under-19 and India A teams he built the pipeline that produced Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and others, before guiding the senior side to the 2024 T20 World Cup. Few cricketers anywhere have influenced the game so deeply both on the field and in development.
