Yuvraj Singh is a former India all-rounder who hit six sixes in an over at the 2007 T20 World Cup and was Player of the Tournament when India won the 2011 Cricket World Cup — while unknowingly suffering from cancer. After treatment he returned to international cricket.
Biography
Early career
Yuvraj is the son of former India fast bowler Yograj Singh, who pushed him hard into cricket. He starred as India won the Under-19 World Cup in 2000 and made his senior debut the same year, scoring 84 against Australia in only his second match.
Six sixes
At the 2007 T20 World Cup in Durban he hit England’s Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over and reached fifty in 12 balls, still the fastest in T20 internationals. India went on to win the tournament.
2011 World Cup
At the 2011 World Cup he scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets and was named Player of the Tournament as India won at home. During the tournament he was coughing and vomiting; soon afterwards he was diagnosed with a rare germ-cell tumour between his lungs and had chemotherapy in the United States.
Comeback and charity
He returned to the India team in 2012 and played until 2017, retiring in 2019. He founded the YouWeCan foundation to support cancer patients and screening. He received the Arjuna Award in 2012 and the Padma Shri in 2014.
