Virender Sehwag is a former India opening batsman who changed the way openers played Test cricket with his attacking style. He was the first Indian to score a Test triple century and made two of them, and was part of the teams that won the 2011 World Cup and 2007 T20 World Cup.
Biography
Najafgarh to India
Sehwag grew up in a joint family in Najafgarh on the outskirts of Delhi. He made his one-day debut in 1999 and scored a century on his Test debut in South Africa in 2001, batting in the middle order before Sourav Ganguly made him a Test opener.
Multan and Chennai
In 2004 at Multan he scored 309, the first triple century by an Indian in Tests, earning the nickname “Multan ka Sultan”. In 2008 he made 319 against South Africa in Chennai, at the time the fastest Test triple century. He also made 293 against Sri Lanka in 2009.
A unique style
Sehwag hit the ball hard from the first over, relied on hand-eye coordination more than footwork and scored at a strike rate rarely seen in Tests. His 219 against the West Indies in 2011 was then the highest score in a one-day international.
After cricket
He was a member of the teams that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He retired in 2015 with 8,586 Test runs and 8,273 ODI runs, and has since become a popular commentator known for his humour on social media.
