Samuel Morse was an American painter and inventor who developed a single-wire electric telegraph system and, with Alfred Vail, the Morse code. His 1844 message from Washington to Baltimore, “What hath God wrought”, opened the age of electrical communication.

Biography

Painter

Morse studied at Yale and at the Royal Academy in London and became a respected portrait painter. He was a founder of the National Academy of Design in New York and a professor of painting at New York University.

The idea

In 1825, while he was in Washington painting, his wife died suddenly; the letter telling him took days to arrive. On a voyage home from Europe in 1832 he learned about electromagnets and conceived an electric telegraph.

Telegraph and code

With help from Leonard Gale and Alfred Vail he built a working system and a code of dots and dashes. Congress funded a line from Washington to Baltimore, and on 24 May 1844 Morse sent the message “What hath God wrought”.

Legacy

Telegraph lines spread across America and the world. Morse won patent battles and grew wealthy, though he also held strongly nativist and pro-slavery views that are now widely criticised. He died in 1872.
