V. S. Gaitonde was an Indian abstract painter whose layered, luminous canvases, influenced by Zen Buddhism, made him one of the most admired modern Indian artists. A reclusive figure, he was the subject of a Guggenheim retrospective in 2014, and his works have set auction records. He died in 2001.

Biography

Bombay

Gaitonde grew up in Bombay in a Goan family and graduated from the Sir J. J. School of Art in 1948. He was associated with the Progressive Artists’ Group and early on painted in a style influenced by Paul Klee and Indian miniatures.

Non-objective painting

From the late 1950s he moved towards pure abstraction, which he preferred to call “non-objective” painting. Using rollers and palette knives, he built up thin, translucent layers of colour that seem to glow from within. Zen Buddhism, which he studied closely, shaped his patient, meditative approach.

New York and Delhi

A Rockefeller fellowship took him to New York in 1964, where he saw the work of the Abstract Expressionists. In 1972 he moved to Delhi, where he lived alone in a small flat, working slowly and producing only a few paintings a year.

Legacy

Gaitonde received the Padma Shri in 1971 and died in Gurgaon on 10 August 2001. In 2014–15 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York held a major retrospective of his work. His paintings have repeatedly set records for Indian art at auction.
