Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born inventor and teacher of deaf people who was granted the first US patent for the telephone in 1876. The Bell Telephone Company, founded in 1877, grew into AT&T. He also invented the photophone and worked on aviation and hydrofoils.
Biography
Speech and hearing
Bell’s father and grandfather taught elocution, and his mother was deaf, which shaped his lifelong interest in sound and speech. The family moved to Canada in 1870, and Bell taught at schools for the deaf in Boston.
The telephone
Experimenting with sending several telegraph messages at once, Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson worked on transmitting the voice. He received US patent 174,465 on 7 March 1876, and on 10 March made the first call: “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.” Rival claims, including Elisha Gray’s, led to long legal battles that Bell won.
Business and research
The Bell Telephone Company was founded in 1877. Bell used his wealth for research, inventing the photophone (1880), which sent sound on a beam of light, and founding the Volta Laboratory and Science magazine.
Later life
At his estate in Nova Scotia he experimented with kites, aircraft and hydrofoils; his HD-4 set a water speed record in 1919. He died in 1922, and telephones across North America were silenced for a minute during his funeral.
