Charles Correa was one of India’s most important architects and urban planners. His buildings, such as the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya in Ahmedabad and the Kanchanjunga Apartments in Mumbai, adapted modern architecture to India’s climate and culture, and he helped plan Navi Mumbai. He died in 2015.

Biography

Education

Correa grew up in a Goan Catholic family and studied at the University of Michigan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He returned to India and opened his practice in Bombay in 1958.

Architecture for India

His first major building, the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya (1963) at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, used open courtyards, tiled roofs and simple materials. He developed ideas such as “open-to-sky” spaces and section-based design to keep buildings cool, as in the Kanchanjunga Apartments in Mumbai (1983), with its double-height garden verandas.

Major works

Other buildings include Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal (1982), the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur (1992), whose plan is based on a traditional mandala, the British Council in Delhi, the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex at MIT and the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon (2010).

Cities and honours

As chief architect of the new city of Navi Mumbai in the early 1970s and chairman of the National Commission on Urbanisation, he worked on low-cost housing and urban growth. He received the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 1984, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1998 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2006. He died in Mumbai on 16 June 2015.
