Satish Gujral was a painter, sculptor, muralist and architect who lost his hearing as a child and became one of India’s most versatile artists. His paintings of Partition and his design of the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi are among his best-known works. He died in 2020.
Biography
Silence
At the age of eight, an illness and its treatment left Satish Gujral deaf, and he later lost much of his ability to speak. He turned to drawing, studying at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore and then at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay.
Partition and Mexico
The violence of Partition in 1947, which forced his family to leave Lahore for Delhi, became the subject of his early paintings of grief and displacement. In 1952 a scholarship took him to Mexico, where he studied with muralists Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Many media
Gujral worked in painting, sculpture, murals, graphics and jewellery, often experimenting with materials such as burnt wood and metal. He created large murals for public buildings in India.
Architect
Self-taught in architecture, he designed the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi (1983), whose sculptural brick forms were later included in a list of the best buildings of the twentieth century. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and died in Delhi on 26 March 2020. His brother Inder Kumar Gujral was Prime Minister of India.
