Lisa Su is a Taiwanese-American electrical engineer who has been CEO of AMD since 2014. She revived the struggling chipmaker with the Zen architecture behind its Ryzen and EPYC processors and made it a major competitor in AI chips.
Biography
Education
Su was born in Tainan and moved to the United States as a small child. She earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering at MIT, finishing her PhD in 1994.
IBM and Freescale
At IBM she worked on making chips faster with copper connections and silicon-on-insulator technology and on the Cell processor used in the PlayStation 3. She then worked at Freescale Semiconductor.
AMD turnaround
Su joined AMD in 2012 and became CEO in October 2014, when it was losing money. She bet on the Zen processor design; Ryzen (2017) and EPYC server chips won back market share from Intel, and AMD’s chips power the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
AI
AMD’s Instinct accelerators compete with Nvidia in AI data centres. Time named Su CEO of the Year in 2024, and one of the “Architects of AI” in 2025.
