Jensen Huang is a Taiwanese-American electrical engineer who co-founded Nvidia in 1993 and has led it ever since. Nvidia invented the graphics processing unit for gaming and, through its CUDA platform, became the main supplier of chips for artificial intelligence, becoming the first company worth more than $5 trillion in 2025.
Biography
Early life
Huang was born in Tainan, lived in Thailand and was sent to the United States aged nine, attending a boarding school in Kentucky. He studied electrical engineering at Oregon State University and earned a master’s at Stanford.
Founding Nvidia
After working at AMD and LSI Logic, he founded Nvidia in 1993 with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, reportedly planning it at a Denny’s restaurant. The GeForce 256 (1999) was marketed as the first GPU.
CUDA and AI
In 2006 Nvidia released CUDA, letting GPUs be programmed for general computing. When deep learning took off with AlexNet in 2012, Nvidia’s chips became essential. Demand for its data-centre GPUs during the AI boom made it one of the world’s most valuable companies.

Huang is known for his black leather jacket and long keynote presentations. In 2025 Time named him among the “Architects of AI” as its Person of the Year.
