JJ Valaya was among the first students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi, graduating in 1991, and launched his label the next year.
Royal style
His designs draw on India’s royal and nomadic traditions, Ottoman and Persian art and European tailoring, with rich embroidery, layered textures and structured silhouettes, especially for bridal and occasion wear.
Industry builder
He was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India in 1998, which helped organise India’s fashion weeks.
