Dhruv Rathee is a YouTuber from Haryana whose explainer videos on social, political and environmental issues have made him one of India’s most widely followed online commentators. His political videos are popular with critics of the government and criticised by its supporters.
Biography
Early life and education
Dhruv Rathee was born in Haryana and completed his schooling there before moving to Germany, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in renewable energy from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He has kept his Indian citizenship.
YouTube career
Rathee began uploading travel videos in 2013 but by the end of that year had turned to political and social topics. According to the news site ThePrint, he was one of the first Indians to use YouTube as a political platform. His researched, fast-paced Hindi explainers cover history, science, the environment and current affairs. He also created the satirical segment Pee News, and wrote opinion columns for ThePrint from 2017 to 2020.
Expanding his work
He launched a travel vlog channel in 2020, a Shorts channel for 30-second fact videos, and in April 2024 five channels dubbing his videos into Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and Kannada. He has hosted shows for Deutsche Welle and Netflix India and a Spotify podcast. Time named him one of its Next Generation Leaders in 2023.
Style and reach
Rathee’s videos are known for slick graphics, on-screen sources and a calm, structured delivery that explains complex topics — from climate change and history to elections — in under 20 minutes. His audience expanded sharply among first-time voters during the 2024 general election, and media analysts cited him as an example of how independent YouTubers were challenging traditional television news in India.
Influence and criticism
His commentary, often critical of the BJP-led government, drew very large audiences around the 2024 general election. Supporters see him as an important independent voice; critics accuse him of bias and selective use of facts.
