Rohit Bal was a fashion designer known for lavish menswear and womenswear drawing on Kashmiri motifs, Mughal art and Indian textiles. One of the founders of modern Indian fashion, he was celebrated for his dramatic runway shows. He died in 2024.
Biography
Kashmir
Rohit Bal grew up in Srinagar in a Kashmiri Pandit family and studied history at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He joined his brother’s export business before launching his own label in 1990.
Signature style
His designs drew on the lotus, the peacock, the chinar leaf and Kashmiri embroidery, using rich velvets, brocades and khadi. He was known for theatrical shows and for dressing film stars and international celebrities.
Recognition
He was named Designer of the Year at the Indian Fashion Awards and was one of the most influential figures in the growth of Indian fashion weeks from the late 1990s. He also designed for hotels and collaborated with brands.
Final show
Despite serious heart problems, he presented his last collection at Lakmé Fashion Week in October 2024. He died in Delhi on 1 November 2024.
