Manish Malhotra is a Mumbai-based fashion designer who began as a costume designer for Hindi films, winning a Filmfare Award for Rangeela (1995), and built one of India’s leading couture and bridal labels.

Biography

Costume designer

Manish Malhotra began as a model and in 1990 started designing costumes for Hindi films. His work on Rangeela (1995), turning Urmila Matondkar into a style icon, won the first Filmfare Award for Best Costume Design. He became the go-to designer for Bollywood blockbusters, styling Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer-Zaara and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and also designed for Tamil cinema’s Enthiran.

Couture label

He launched his eponymous label in 2005. It is known for sequinned saris, bridal lehengas and celebrity wedding wardrobes, and has flagship stores in Indian cities as well as international presence. He later added Manish Malhotra High Jewellery.

Film production and global profile

He later set up the film production company Stage5 Production. He walked the Met Gala red carpet in New York in 2024 and 2025.

Awards

Besides the Filmfare Award for Rangeela, he has won IIFA awards for costume design for Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho, a Filmfare Award South for Enthiran, and the Priyadarshini Memorial Award for his contribution to fashion.

Label and business

Malhotra launched his own couture label in 2005, opening a flagship store in Mumbai that became a destination for bridal and celebrity wear. In 2021 Reliance Brands acquired a 40 percent stake in the business to fund its expansion, and the brand has since grown into beauty, jewellery and international stores.

Influence on Bollywood style

Malhotra is credited with modernising how Hindi film heroines dressed on screen in the 1990s, replacing elaborate costumes with contemporary, fashion-led looks that audiences copied off-screen. His long association with filmmakers such as Karan Johar and Yash Chopra shaped the glamorous aesthetic of a generation of Bollywood romances, and he continues to dress leading actresses for films, weddings and red carpets.
