Thomas J. Watson was an American businessman who led the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company from 1914, renamed it International Business Machines (IBM) in 1924 and built it into the dominant maker of punched-card business machines. His sales culture and “THINK” motto shaped corporate America.
Biography
NCR
Watson grew up in rural New York and became a top salesman at the National Cash Register Company under John Patterson. He was convicted with NCR executives of antitrust violations in 1913, a verdict later overturned, and was fired.
Building IBM
In 1914 he became general manager of CTR, the merger that included Herman Hollerith’s tabulating firm. He focused on tabulating machines, created a strong sales force with dress codes and company songs, and in 1924 renamed it IBM.
Depression and war
IBM kept hiring during the Great Depression and won huge contracts, including for the new Social Security system. Watson funded the Harvard Mark I. His meeting with Hitler and a Nazi medal in 1937, which he later returned, remain controversial.
Succession
He handed the presidency to his son Thomas Watson Jr. in 1952 and died in 1956, weeks after making him CEO.
