Jeff Dean is an American computer scientist at Google who co-designed systems that let Google run at enormous scale, including MapReduce and Bigtable with Sanjay Ghemawat. He co-founded Google Brain, led TensorFlow and was Google’s chief scientist from 2023 to 2026, before co-founding the AI start-up Discovery Loop.
Biography
Background
Dean grew up in Hawaii, Somalia, Uganda and elsewhere. He studied at the University of Minnesota and earned his PhD at the University of Washington on compilers. He worked at DEC’s research lab and joined Google in 1999.
Scaling Google
With Sanjay Ghemawat he built many of Google’s core systems: its ads and indexing systems, MapReduce (2004) for processing huge data sets, Bigtable and later Spanner. MapReduce inspired the open-source Hadoop.
Google Brain
In 2011 he co-founded Google Brain with Andrew Ng and Greg Corrado, applying large neural networks to speech, images and translation. He led the creation of TensorFlow, released in 2015.
Gemini
After Google Brain merged with DeepMind in 2023, Dean became Google’s chief scientist, co-leading the Gemini AI models until 2026. That year he co-founded the AI research start-up Discovery Loop with Sanjay Ghemawat and others.
