Biography
Background
Ng was born in London to Hong Kong parents and grew up in Hong Kong and Singapore. He studied at Carnegie Mellon and MIT and earned his PhD at UC Berkeley under Michael Jordan.
Stanford and Google Brain
As a Stanford professor he worked on robotics and machine learning, including autonomous helicopters. In 2011 he co-founded Google Brain, whose network famously learned to recognise cats from YouTube videos.
Coursera
In 2012 he and Daphne Koller co-founded Coursera. His online machine-learning course became one of the most popular ever.
Baidu and beyond
He was chief scientist at Baidu from 2014 to 2017, then founded DeepLearning.AI, Landing AI and the AI Fund. He joined Amazon’s board in 2024.
