Chandra Shekhar Azad was a revolutionary leader of the Indian independence movement and a mentor to Bhagat Singh. He took part in the Kakori train robbery and led the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. Surrounded by police in Allahabad in 1931, he shot himself rather than be captured.

Biography

“Azad”

As a fifteen-year-old student in Varanasi, Chandrashekhar Tiwari was arrested during the Non-cooperation Movement. Asked his name in court, he said “Azad” (free), gave his father’s name as “Swatantrata” (independence) and his address as “prison”. He was sentenced to flogging, and the name Azad stayed with him.

Revolutionary

Disillusioned when Gandhi called off the Non-cooperation Movement in 1922, he joined the Hindustan Republican Association. In 1925 he took part in the Kakori train robbery, in which revolutionaries seized government money from a train. He evaded capture when most of the group was arrested.

Leader

Azad reorganised the movement as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association with Bhagat Singh and others, and was involved in the planning of actions including the Saunders killing in 1928. Known for his skill in disguise, he repeatedly escaped the police.

Last stand

On 27 February 1931, betrayed by an informer, he was surrounded by police in Alfred Park in Allahabad. After a gunfight he used his last bullet on himself, keeping his vow never to be taken alive. The park is now named Chandrashekhar Azad Park.
