Frank Rosenblatt was an American psychologist who invented the perceptron in 1957, one of the first artificial neural networks that could learn from examples, and built the Mark I Perceptron machine. He is sometimes called the father of deep learning. He died in 1971.
Biography
Background
Rosenblatt attended the Bronx High School of Science with Marvin Minsky and earned a PhD in psychology at Cornell.
The perceptron
At the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in 1957 he described the perceptron, a model neuron that adjusts its weights to classify inputs. In 1958 the US Navy demonstrated it, and The New York Times reported it as the embryo of a thinking computer.
Mark I
He built the Mark I Perceptron, a machine with 400 photocells that learned to recognise simple shapes. His book Principles of Neurodynamics (1962) described multilayer ideas.
Decline and legacy
Minsky and Papert’s 1969 book Perceptrons highlighted limits of single-layer perceptrons, and funding fell. Rosenblatt died in a boating accident on his 43rd birthday in 1971; neural networks later returned to dominate AI.
