Biography
Life
Tulsidas lived in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in north India, mostly in Ayodhya and Varanasi. Much of his life story comes from later traditions, which describe a hard childhood and a turn to devotion to Rama.
Ramcharitmanas
Beginning around 1574 in Ayodhya, he wrote the Ramcharitmanas, “the lake of the deeds of Rama”, retelling Valmiki’s Ramayana in Awadhi, a language ordinary people spoke. It made the story of Rama accessible to millions and remains central to Hindu devotion in north India.
Other works
He also wrote works such as the Vinaya Patrika and Kavitavali, and is traditionally credited with the Hanuman Chalisa, a hymn recited by millions daily.
Legacy
The Ramlila performances of north India draw heavily on the Ramcharitmanas, and Tulsi Ghat in Varanasi is named after him. He is regarded as one of the greatest poets in Hindi literature.
