Mirabai was a sixteenth-century Rajput princess and poet-saint whose passionate songs of devotion to Krishna are still sung across India. Legends describe how she defied her royal family’s expectations to follow her devotion.

Biography

A royal devotee

Mirabai was born into the Rathore royal family of Merta in Rajasthan around 1498 and was married into the ruling family of Mewar. According to tradition, she considered Krishna her true husband from childhood.

Defiance

After her husband’s death she refused to follow the customs expected of a royal widow, sang and danced in temples and mixed with holy men of all backgrounds. Legends say her in-laws tried to harm her, but she was miraculously saved.

Poetry

Hundreds of songs in Rajasthani and Braj Bhasha are attributed to her, expressing longing and love for Krishna in simple, intense language. Their exact authorship is debated, but they are among the best-loved devotional songs in India.

Legacy

Tradition says she spent her final years in Dwarka. Her life has inspired films, including the 1945 Tamil film Meera starring M. S. Subbulakshmi, and her bhajans are performed by classical and popular singers.
