Background
Gou’s parents fled mainland China to Taiwan. He studied at the China Marine Business College and worked at a rubber factory.
Hon Hai
In 1974 he founded Hon Hai to make plastic knobs for televisions. It moved into connectors and in 1988 opened a factory in Shenzhen.
Foxconn
Foxconn assembled computers for Dell and HP, game consoles and, from 2007, the iPhone, employing more than a million people in China. A cluster of worker suicides in 2010 led to criticism of conditions.
Politics
He stepped down as chairman in 2019 to seek the Kuomintang presidential nomination and ran as an independent candidate in 2023 before withdrawing.
