Morris Chang is a Taiwanese engineer and businessman who founded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in 1987, inventing the “pure-play foundry” that makes chips designed by others. TSMC now manufactures most of the world’s most advanced chips, for Apple, Nvidia and AMD.

Background
Chang was born in Ningbo in 1931 and fled the Chinese civil war. He studied at Harvard and MIT and earned a PhD in electrical engineering at Stanford.
Texas Instruments
He spent 25 years at Texas Instruments, rising to lead its worldwide semiconductor business, and pioneered pricing chips ahead of the cost curve.
TSMC
Invited to Taiwan to lead the Industrial Technology Research Institute, he founded TSMC in 1987 as a chip factory with no products of its own. This let companies such as Nvidia and Qualcomm design chips without building factories.
Legacy
He was CEO until 2005, returned in 2009 and retired as chairman in 2018. TSMC is Taiwan’s most valuable company. His memoir appeared in 2024.
