Sonia Gandhi is a Congress leader who served as the party’s president from 1998 to 2017 and again from 2019 to 2022, longer than anyone else. She led the Congress back to power in 2004 and chaired the United Progressive Alliance for a decade.
Biography
Early life
Sonia Maino was born in a village near Vicenza in northern Italy and grew up in Orbassano near Turin. While studying English at a language school in Cambridge she met Rajiv Gandhi, whom she married in 1968. She became an Indian citizen in 1983. For years after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991 she stayed out of politics.
Party leader
Sonia Gandhi joined the Congress in 1997 and became its president in 1998. Elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999, she served as Leader of the Opposition until 2004. In the 2004 election she led the Congress back to power but declined the prime ministership, and Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister.
As chair of the UPA and of the National Advisory Council, she is credited with championing rights-based laws on rural employment, information, education and food security. She represented Rae Bareli from 2004 to 2024.
Reluctant politician
After Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991, Congress leaders urged Sonia Gandhi to lead the party, but she declined for several years, devoting herself to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. She agreed to campaign in 1997 as the party’s fortunes declined, and her leadership is credited with holding the Congress together. Opponents campaigned on her Italian birth, an issue that led Sharad Pawar and others to leave the party in 1999.
National Advisory Council
As chair of the National Advisory Council in the UPA years, she championed the Right to Information Act (2005), the rural employment guarantee (MGNREGA, 2005), the Forest Rights Act (2006), the Right to Education Act (2009) and the National Food Security Act (2013). Forbes repeatedly ranked her among the world’s most powerful women.
Later years
She stepped down as party president in 2017 in favour of her son Rahul, returned as interim president from 2019 to 2022, and moved to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan in 2024.
