Sheryl Sandberg is an American technology executive who was chief operating officer of Facebook (later Meta) from 2008 to 2022, building its advertising business. Her 2013 book Lean In encouraged women to pursue leadership and led to the LeanIn.Org foundation.
Biography
Background
Sandberg grew up in North Miami Beach and studied economics at Harvard. She worked at the World Bank and as chief of staff to US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.
Joining Google in 2001, she built its online sales and operations, helping make AdWords a huge business.
Mark Zuckerberg hired her as COO in 2008. She developed Facebook’s advertising model, and the company became highly profitable. She was also involved in its responses to privacy and election controversies.
Lean In and Option B
Her 2013 book Lean In became a global bestseller. After her husband Dave Goldberg died suddenly in 2015, she wrote Option B about resilience. She left her COO role in 2022 and Meta’s board in 2024.
