Biography
Early life
Zuckerberg grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and learned programming as a child, writing a messaging system for his father’s dental office. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and studied at Harvard.
In February 2004 he launched “TheFacebook” for Harvard students with Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum and Chris Hughes. It spread to other universities and then the world. He left Harvard and moved the company to Palo Alto.
Meta
In 2021 the company was renamed Meta to focus on virtual reality and the “metaverse”. More recently Meta has invested heavily in AI, releasing the Llama models and creating Meta Superintelligence Labs in 2025. With his wife Priscilla Chan he runs the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
Growth and controversy
Facebook went public in 2012 and bought Instagram (2012) and WhatsApp (2014). It faced scrutiny over privacy, misinformation and the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal, and Zuckerberg testified before the US Congress.
