Sepp Hochreiter is a German computer scientist who, as a student of Jürgen Schmidhuber, identified the vanishing-gradient problem and co-invented long short-term memory networks. He leads the Institute for Machine Learning at Johannes Kepler University Linz and developed the xLSTM architecture.
Biography
Diploma thesis
Hochreiter studied computer science at the Technical University of Munich. His 1991 diploma thesis showed why deep and recurrent networks struggle to learn: error signals shrink or explode as they pass back through layers.
LSTM
With Schmidhuber he designed LSTM (1997), using memory cells and gates to overcome the problem. It became one of the most cited papers of the century.
Bioinformatics
He led the Institute of Bioinformatics at Johannes Kepler University Linz from 2006 and developed methods for genetic data, as well as SELU activation functions.
xLSTM
Since 2018 he has led the Institute for Machine Learning in Linz. In 2024 he introduced xLSTM, an extended LSTM to rival transformers, and co-founded the company NXAI.
