Background
Lerdorf was born in Greenland, grew up in Denmark and Canada and graduated in systems design engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1993.
PHP grows
Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski rewrote the parser for PHP 3 in 1997, renaming it “PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor”. PHP became the backbone of the LAMP stack and runs a large share of websites.
Career
Lerdorf has worked at Yahoo!, Etsy and WePay and continues to contribute to PHP and speak at conferences.
Personal Home Page tools
In 1994 he wrote small programs in C to track visits to his online CV, and in June 1995 released them as “Personal Home Page Tools”. They let people embed code in web pages.
