Jeffrey Ullman is an American computer scientist and Stanford professor emeritus whose textbooks on compilers, automata, databases and data mining have been used worldwide. He co-wrote the “Dragon Book” with Alfred Aho, with whom he shared the 2020 Turing Award.
Biography
Education
Ullman studied engineering mathematics at Columbia University and earned his PhD at Princeton in 1966. He worked at Bell Labs and taught at Princeton.
Textbooks
With Alfred Aho he wrote books on algorithms and compilers, and with John Hopcroft the standard automata-theory text. His later books on database systems and, with Anand Rajaraman and Jure Leskovec, Mining of Massive Datasets are widely used, the last free online.
Database theory
At Stanford from 1979 he did foundational work on database theory, query optimisation and data integration. His doctoral students include Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google.
Gradiance and honours
He founded Gradiance, an online homework system. He received the Knuth Prize in 2000 and the Turing Award with Aho in 2020.
