Biography
University
Buytaert studied at the University of Antwerp, where he built a message board for his student friends. He later earned a PhD in computer science from Ghent University in 2008.
Drupal
In 2001 he released the software as open source under the name Drupal, from the Dutch word “druppel” (drop). A large global community grew around it, and Drupal powered sites such as the White House’s in the Obama era.
Acquia
In 2007 he co-founded Acquia in Boston, which offers cloud services for Drupal. It was bought by the private-equity firm Vista Equity Partners in 2019.
Leadership
Buytaert remains Drupal’s project lead and writes a long-running blog about open source and the web.
