Ashish Vaswani is an Indian computer scientist who was first author of “Attention Is All You Need”, the 2017 Google paper that introduced the transformer, the architecture behind GPT, Gemini and Claude. He co-founded Adept AI and Essential AI, which joined Nvidia in 2026.
Biography
Education
Vaswani studied computer science in India at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, and earned his PhD at the University of Southern California, working on neural machine translation.
The transformer
At Google Brain he led the 2017 paper “Attention Is All You Need”, which replaced recurrent networks with attention mechanisms. Transformers trained faster and scaled to enormous sizes, and became the basis of almost all large language models.
Adept and Essential
He left Google in 2021 to co-found Adept AI, building AI agents, and then Essential AI, which developed open models.
Nvidia
In 2026 Nvidia hired Vaswani and the Essential AI team.
