Mangal Pandey was a soldier of the East India Company’s Bengal Army whose attack on British officers at Barrackpore in March 1857 is often seen as the first act of the Indian rebellion of 1857. He was executed in April 1857.
Biography
Sepoy
Mangal Pandey joined the 34th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry in 1849. At the time, many Indian soldiers were angry over pay, conditions and rumours that cartridges for the new Enfield rifle were greased with cow and pig fat, offending both Hindus and Muslims.
Barrackpore
On 29 March 1857, at the Barrackpore cantonment near Calcutta, he called on fellow soldiers to rise and attacked British officers. Other sepoys did not join him, and he was arrested.
Execution
He was tried by court martial and hanged on 8 April 1857. Weeks later, in May 1857, a much wider rebellion broke out at Meerut and spread across north India.
Legacy
Mangal Pandey became a symbol of the first war of independence. India Post issued a stamp in his honour in 1984, and his story was told in the film Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005).
