Kevin Systrom is an American programmer and entrepreneur who co-founded the photo-sharing app Instagram with Mike Krieger in 2010. Facebook bought it in 2012 for $1 billion, and it grew to more than a billion users. Systrom left in 2018.
Biography
Stanford
Systrom studied management science and engineering at Stanford, spent time studying photography in Florence and interned at Odeo, which became Twitter. He worked at Google.
Burbn to Instagram
He built Burbn, a check-in app, and with Mike Krieger simplified it into a photo app with filters. Instagram launched on 6 October 2010 and gained a million users in two months.
Facebook bought Instagram in April 2012 for $1 billion, when it had 13 employees. Systrom stayed as CEO, adding video and Stories.
Later
He and Krieger left in 2018 amid tension with Facebook. In 2023 they launched Artifact, an AI news app, which closed in 2024.
