Bjarne Stroustrup is a Danish computer scientist who created C++ at Bell Labs, adding classes and other features to C. C++ became one of the most important programming languages, used for operating systems, games, browsers and financial systems.

Biography

Education

Stroustrup studied mathematics and computer science at Aarhus University and earned his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 1979, where he used Simula and saw the value of its classes.

C with Classes

At Bell Labs in 1979 he began “C with Classes”, adding Simula-style objects to C’s speed. Renamed C++ in 1983, it was released commercially in 1985 with his book The C++ Programming Language.

Standardisation

C++ was standardised by ISO in 1998 and has been updated regularly since. It powers software from Windows and Chrome to Unreal Engine and high-frequency trading.

Teaching

Stroustrup was a professor at Texas A&M University, worked at Morgan Stanley and became a professor at Columbia University. He received the Draper Prize in 2018 and in 2026 also joined the trading firm Susquehanna as a part-time technical fellow.
