Jürgen Schmidhuber is a German computer scientist whose lab at the Swiss AI institute IDSIA developed long short-term memory (LSTM) networks with his student Sepp Hochreiter. LSTMs powered speech recognition and translation on billions of phones in the 2010s.
Biography
Education
Schmidhuber studied computer science and mathematics at the Technical University of Munich, completing his doctorate in 1991.
LSTM
His student Sepp Hochreiter analysed the vanishing-gradient problem in 1991. Together they published long short-term memory in 1997, a recurrent network that can remember information over long sequences.
IDSIA
As co-director of IDSIA in Lugano from 1995, his team won pattern-recognition competitions with deep networks on GPUs before 2012 and worked on artificial curiosity and meta-learning.
Credit debates
He has argued that his lab’s work anticipated many later deep-learning ideas and has publicly disputed credit with the 2018 Turing laureates. He also directs AI at KAUST in Saudi Arabia and co-founded NNAISENSE.
