Background
Tsai was born in Taiwan to a family of lawyers and went to boarding school in the US at 13. He studied economics and East Asian studies at Yale and earned a law degree from Yale Law School.
Joining Jack Ma
Working for the investment firm Investor AB in Hong Kong, he met Jack Ma in 1999 and left a high salary to join Alibaba for a token wage, setting up its legal and financial structure and raising early funding from Goldman Sachs and SoftBank.

As executive vice-chairman he led major deals and the 2014 IPO. In 2023 he became chairman as Alibaba split into business groups.
Sport
He bought the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center in 2019 and owns lacrosse and other sports teams. He founded the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation.
