Dietmar Hopp is a German software engineer and billionaire who co-founded SAP in 1972 and later served as its CEO. He used his fortune to take his boyhood football club, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, from the amateur leagues to the Bundesliga.
Biography
IBM
Hopp studied communications engineering at Karlsruhe and joined IBM in 1966 as a systems consultant.
SAP
In 1972 he co-founded SAP. He was CEO from 1988 to 1998 and later chaired the supervisory board.
Hoffenheim
Hopp had played for TSG Hoffenheim as a youth. From 1990 he invested heavily, and the club reached the Bundesliga in 2008 and the Champions League in 2018, drawing protests from some rival fans.
Philanthropy
The Dietmar Hopp Foundation, one of Germany’s largest, supports health, sport and education. He also invested in biotech, including CureVac.
