Ian Goodfellow is an American computer scientist who invented generative adversarial networks in 2014, in which two neural networks compete to create realistic images. GANs launched modern AI image generation. He co-wrote the standard Deep Learning textbook and has worked at Google, OpenAI, Apple and DeepMind.
Biography
Education
Goodfellow studied computer science at Stanford under Andrew Ng and earned his PhD at the Université de Montréal under Yoshua Bengio and Aaron Courville.
GANs
In 2014, after an argument with friends at a Montreal bar, he went home and coded the first GAN that night. A generator network creates samples while a discriminator tries to tell them from real data; competition improves both.
Security of AI
At Google Brain he studied adversarial examples, tiny changes to inputs that fool neural networks, and co-wrote Deep Learning (2016) with Bengio and Courville.
Career
He worked at OpenAI, returned to Google, and was director of machine learning at Apple until 2022, when he left over return-to-office policy. He then joined DeepMind.
