Dov Frohman is a Dutch-born Israeli electrical engineer who invented the EPROM, an erasable memory chip, at Intel in 1971. He founded Intel’s operations in Israel, which became one of its most important design centres, and kept its Jerusalem plant running during the 1991 Gulf War.
Biography
Education
He studied electrical engineering at the Technion and earned a PhD at UC Berkeley, then joined Fairchild and Intel.
Hidden child
Frohman was born in Amsterdam in 1939 to Polish Jewish parents and hidden by a Dutch family during the Holocaust; his parents were murdered. He emigrated to Israel in 1949.
EPROM
At Intel in 1971 he invented the EPROM, a memory chip that could be erased with ultraviolet light and reprogrammed. It became a major Intel product and was used to store programs in early computers.
Intel Israel
He founded Intel Israel in 1974, which designed processors such as the Pentium M and later Core chips. During Iraqi missile attacks in 1991 he kept the Jerusalem plant open.
