Gordon Moore was an American chemist and businessman who co-founded Intel. His 1965 prediction that the number of transistors on a chip would keep doubling at a regular rate, known as Moore’s law, guided the semiconductor industry for half a century. He died in 2023.

Biography

Background

Moore grew up in Pescadero, California, studied chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a PhD at Caltech in 1954. He joined William Shockley’s lab in 1956 and was one of the eight who left to found Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957.

Moore’s law

In a 1965 article in Electronics magazine, Moore observed that the number of components on a chip had doubled every year and predicted the trend would continue. In 1975 he revised it to every two years. The forecast became a target that drove the industry for decades.

Intel

With Robert Noyce he founded Intel in 1968. He was its CEO from 1975 to 1987 and chairman until 1997, overseeing its rise to the world’s largest chipmaker.

Philanthropy

He and his wife Betty founded the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in 2000, which has given billions to science, environmental conservation and patient care. He died in Hawaii in March 2023.
