Andy Grove was a Hungarian-American engineer and businessman who survived the Holocaust, fled the 1956 revolution and became Intel’s third employee. As CEO from 1987 to 1998 he shifted Intel from memory chips to microprocessors, making it the world’s largest chipmaker. His management books influenced Silicon Valley.

Biography

Survival

Born to a Jewish family in Budapest, Grove survived the Nazi occupation in hiding. In 1956, aged 20, he escaped to Austria after the Hungarian revolution and reached New York.

Science

He studied chemical engineering at the City College of New York and earned a PhD at UC Berkeley in 1963. At Fairchild Semiconductor he wrote a respected textbook on semiconductor physics.

Intel

Grove joined Intel on the day of its founding in 1968. As president and then CEO from 1987, he made the painful decision to leave the memory business and focus on microprocessors, and Intel’s chips powered the PC boom. Time named him Man of the Year in 1997.

Management

His books High Output Management (1983) and Only the Paranoid Survive (1996) introduced ideas such as “strategic inflection points” and objectives and key results (OKRs). He died in 2016 after living for years with Parkinson’s disease.
