Biography

Education

Jhunjhunwala studied electrical engineering at IIT Kanpur and earned a PhD at the University of Maine in the United States. He taught at Washington State University before joining IIT Madras in 1981.

Affordable telecom

At IIT Madras he led the TeNeT group, which developed low-cost technologies such as the corDECT wireless local loop to bring telephone and internet connections to rural India in the 1990s and 2000s.

Building an ecosystem

He helped set up the IIT Madras Research Park and incubation cell, which have supported hundreds of start-ups, and has worked on electric vehicles, batteries and solar energy.

Honours

He received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1998 and the Padma Shri in 2002, and has served on the boards of several companies and government bodies.
